6-17-13 entry

Post by MayzlDash on Mon Jun 17, 2013 4:43 pm

So… where to begin…
Things have improved since my last entry. I’ve settled in (for the most part), and made a few friends. I have attempted a few sessions, but I have given up half-way through all of them for reasons I can’t explain.
There are things that are really great here, like I’m running for camp president and as I said before, I have a few friends.
But there are also things that aren’t so great. The food’s still terrible, I still don’t have much free time and seem to be the only one who isn’t made of money.
We’re not allowed to gamble to we wager hugs and dares during card games.
Then there is the entertaining nonsense. My room is ”invaded” on an almost daily basis, yesterday there was a troop walking through the halls playing the guitar and yelling “I like to oat oat oat opals and bow-no-nos, I like to ate ate ate, aaples and ba-nae-naes…”

I also met another brony with mixed results….
So, as usual, the first thing asked was who is best pony, to which I, of course, replied, Rainbow Dash.
So what does the dude ask next?
“Have you read cupcakes?”
I truthfully answered “no”,  so what does he do? He starts describing it in detail, even when I asked him to stop! I eventually just walked away… but still…
Ugh.

I've never had any desire to read Cupcakes. Even if I was less squeamish about gore in general, from everything I've heard about the story, it relied on cheap shock value / gore porn, and there's much better [Dark] stories out there. But some people still like the subversion, or like the idea of redemption spin-offs, so okay fine.

But then there's a few people out there who really, truly love that story, and I simply can't understand those folks. Had this guy one time who pitched a fic idea to me, that was basically Cupcakes, but even gorier and staring the CMC. And the look in his eyes as he described the idea was just so eager, so excited. I just can't relate with that feeling at all. It's too antithetical to what I take away from FIM.

I might be able to answer that question for you--remember the scene with Shelob in The Lord of the Rings film? I get chills just thinking about it, and I'm not particularly afraid of spiders. That was a scene that was really, truly, horrific, and masterfully crafted without shock value (just OMG FRODO YOU'RE GONNA DIE suspense). Another example is... no, I cant do it. I cannot mar this forum with the suggestion. *sigh* Anyway, sometimes, something that is pure evil serves as a sharp contrast to things that are good and healthy. It can be a tremendous release when it's over, and the reason people (some, maybe) enjoy the horror genre (or roller coasters). I'm a bit of a wimp, so I tend to avoid those stories, but I do understand why some would embrace them. On the other hand, lately I've been steering well clear of that kind of brutality and toward lighter-hearted fare.
